How the exam works
UPSC runs the Civil Services Examination once a year in three stages. You need to clear each stage to reach the next.
Prelims
Two objective papers: General Studies and CSAT. CSAT is qualifying, so your result at this stage comes from General Studies alone. Prelims marks don't count towards your final rank.
Mains
Nine written papers: an essay, four General Studies papers, two papers in your optional subject, and two qualifying language papers. This is where most of your final score comes from.
Interview
A personality test in front of a UPSC board. It checks your judgement, awareness and suitability for public service, not just your knowledge.
Final list and service allocation
Your Mains and Interview marks decide your rank. Your rank and preferences decide your service, such as IAS, IPS or IFS.

Common questions
Who can take the UPSC Civil Services exam?
You need a graduate degree from a recognised university. Final-year students can apply too. There are also age and attempt limits that depend on your category, so check the latest UPSC notification.
When should I start preparing?
Most students give themselves 12 to 18 months before their first Prelims. Starting during your degree works well if you can keep a steady pace.
Do I need coaching to clear the exam?
No. Many people clear it on their own. Coaching helps if you want structure, regular tests and someone to check your answers.
How do I choose an optional subject?
Pick one you enjoy and can score well in, ideally one you studied at university. We offer a free session to help you decide.
Can I study online and still get answer checking?
Yes. Online students upload their answers and get them back with marks and comments, usually within a few days.
Can I attend a class before I join?
Yes. Book a free demo class and see how we teach before you pay anything.
Are you connected to UPSC?
No. We're an independent coaching academy. For official dates, rules and notifications, always check upsc.gov.in.
